Simptomele fizice, desi suparatoare, nu pun viata in pericol. Terapia de substitutie nicotinica (TSN) poate reduce o mare parte a acestor simptome. Dar, pentru majoritatea fumatorilor, cel mai dificil aspect este cel mental. Aceasta deoarece fumatorii asociaza fumatul cu aproape toate activitatile (luarea mesei, cititul, lucratul, etc.)   Din acest motiv, chiar in conditiile adoptarii TSN, persoanele se confrunta cu dorinta de a fuma.Simptomele sevrajului si durata lor variaza de la o persoana la alta. In general, simptomele apar la cateva ore dupa ultima tigara si se intensifica in timpul serii. Dupa 4 -5 zile, intensitatea lor este diminuata. Unele persoane isi gasesc o ocupatie atunci cand simt nevoia sa fumeze (fac sport, citesc o carte, fac o baie calda, etc.)Principalele simptome si remediile lor:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Semn/ Simptom : &lt;strong&gt;Iritabilitate&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;Durata : 2 -4 saptamani&lt;br /&gt;Remediu : Mers pe jos, baie calda, tehnici de relaxare (muzica, exercitii usoare - stretching)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Semn/ Simptom : &lt;strong&gt;Oboseala, lipsa de energie&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Durata : 2 -4 saptamani&lt;br /&gt;Remediu : Evitarea stresului, deoarece poate duce la surmenaj&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Semn/ Simptom : &lt;strong&gt;Tulburari ale somnului&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Durata : 1 saptamana&lt;br /&gt;Remediu : Evitarea cafeinei (din cafea, bauturi carbogazoase)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Semn/ Simptom : &lt;strong&gt;Tusesecretii nazale posterioare cateva zile&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Remediu : Aporturi suplimentare de apa si sucuri&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Semn/ Simptom : &lt;strong&gt;Probleme de concentrare&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Durata : cateva saptamani&lt;br /&gt;Remediu : diminuarea volumului de lucru si luarea de pauze suplimentare&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Semn/ Simptom : &lt;strong&gt;Gaze dureri gastriceconstipatie&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;Durata : cateva saptamani&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Semn/ Simptom : &lt;strong&gt;Aporturi suplimentare de apa si de alimente bogate in fibre (fructe si legume)&lt;br /&gt;Foame&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;Durata : 2- 4 saptamani&lt;br /&gt;Luarea de gustari cu continut mic de calorii (fructe si legume)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Semn / Simptom : &lt;strong&gt;Nevoia de a fuma&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dorinta de a fuma este mai frecventa in primele zile de sevraj&lt;br /&gt;Implicare intr-o activitate (plimbare, etc.) sau utilizarea unui substituent de nicotina (guma, tablete, inhalator, etc.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; Reguli pentru depasirea dorintei de a fuma:- Consumul de apa – pentru a elimina cat mai rapid nicotina si alte produse chimice din organism.- Respiratia profundaIn locul pauzelor de tigara, luati cateva pauze pentru respiratie. Retineti aerul in piept, apoi expirati incet.- Implicarea intr-o alta activitateCand simtiti nevoia de o tigara, este uneori utila schimbarea activitatii (o plimbare pe jos, sunati un prieten, cititi o carte interesanta, etc)- Lasati timpul sa treacaFumatorii fumeaza atunci cand organismul cere nicotina. Dorinta de a fuma dispare deseori dupa cateva minute.Renuntarea la fumat nu este o sarcina usoara, astfel incat fostii fumatori merita mici recompense.
